Miniature Fox Terrier Fun Facts:

Miniature Fox Terriers, also commonly known as Mini Foxies, are believed to have descended from the larger Smooth Fox Terriers and Manchester Terriers and were first bred in Australia in the mid to late 19th Century. They were originally bred to be a light, fast dog suited to hunting smaller pest species such as rabbits and rodents, but nowadays are not only a farmer’s best friend, but the whole family’s best friend too.

What do Miniature Fox Terriers look like?

Miniature Fox Terriers are a small dog breed typically averaging between 22cm to 30cm tall at the shoulder with a compact, well-proportioned physique generally weighing less than 5.5kg. Despite their small stature, Mini Fox Terriers exhibit a robust and athletic build, contributing to their agility and lively demeanour. They also have a relatively long lifespan and live for an average of 13 to 15 years.

One of the defining features of Mini Fox Terriers is their sleek and smooth coat, which lies close to their body. Their coats are predominately white, with distinct markings in black, tan or a combination of both, which creates a striking and classic appearance. Their facial expression is characterised by dark, alert eyes that radiate intelligence. Coupled with erect, V-shaped ears, they generally look attentive and perky.

Temperament

Miniature Fox Terriers are renowned for their lively and friendly temperament and make excellent companions for families and individuals alike. These little dogs are characterised by their spirited and energetic nature and are always ready for playtime and adventure. Despite their small size, they exhibit a bold and confident demeanour, often displaying a fearlessness that likely descends from their instinct to hunt small animals like foxes.

Intelligence is a key trait of Mini Foxies. These dogs are quick learners and enjoy mental stimulation through training and interactive play. Their alertness and sharp instincts make them responsive to commands and adaptable to different environments. Their intelligence, couple with their natural curiosity, can lead to a mischievous streak, but with proper training and socialisation, they become well-behaved and obedient companions.

Miniature Fox Terriers are known for forming strong bonds with their human family. They thrive on attention and affection, and their loyalty is unwavering. This affectionate nature extends to their interactions with children, making them great family pets. Their sociable temperature also means they usually get along well with other dogs and pets when introduced properly. Despite their high energy levels, they can also be content with lounging beside their owners, enjoying moments of calm companionship.

What to expect

One prominent characteristic to expect when getting a Miniature Fox Terrier is their abundant energy. They are lively and spirited and will seek playtime and activities to keep themselves engaged. Regular exercise is essential to meet their physical and mental stimulation needs. This can include walks, play sessions and interactive games that harness their intelligence and agility. Engaging your Miniature Fox Terrier in activities will help to prevent boredom and potential behavioural issues.

Grooming a Miniature Fox Terrier is relatively straightforward due to their short, smooth coat. Regular brushing is usually sufficient to keep their coat in good condition and occasional baths can be given when necessary. Their small size also means they are generally easy to handle, making grooming a manageable task.

As a sociable and loyal companion, Mini Fox Terriers thrive on human interaction and form strong bonds with their owners. They get along well with children and other larger pets when properly socialised at an early age. They do however have a natural instinct to hunt small rodents so it isn’t advised that you allow them to be alone with any rodent pets.

Be prepared to invest time in training and socialisation to nurture a well-behaved and well-adjusted pet. Overall, you will find a Miniature Fox Terrier to be a delightful and lively addition to your family.
