Cavoodles: The Intelligent and Gentle Family Pet

If you are looking for a low-maintenance family-friendly pet that the kids would love, then the bite-sized Cavoodle may just be the dog for you!

Cavoodles, or also commonly referred to as cavapoo, is a designer dog breed that resulted from cross-breeding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle. They are also often associated with other names such as Cavadoodle and Cavpoo. Its name is an amalgam derived from the names of its parent-breeds.

Inheriting the friendly demeanour of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the intelligence of a Poodle, Cavoodles make for great house pets as they are gentle and intelligent dogs that can be trained easily for indoor living.

Although Cavoodles are one of the most popular hybrid dogs in Australia, the breed has connections to Germany (where poodles originated) and Britain, where King Charles himself decreed that Cavalier Spaniels be allowed in all public spaces –even the chamber of parliament!

The Cavapoo is considered as a small dog, whose weight falls somewhere between 2 to 10 kilograms and grows to be as big as 28cm to 38cm when full grown. With their significantly smaller stature compared to other dogs, they are often classified as “toy breeds”, or dogs that are bred exclusively for domestication and companionship. Their smaller sizes make them the ideal family-friendly pet as they don’t take up much space inside the house and it is easier to carry them around during family trips.

Cavoodles are expected to have a longer lifespan than most dogs; as the larger the dog is, the less likely they will live long. Usually, a Cavoodle is expected to have an average lifespan between 10 to 15 years. Thus, they make great family-friendly pets as they can grow alongside small children and, if cared for properly, will be a part of the family for a very long time.

What do Cavoodles look like?

As toy dogs, Cavoodles are known to be small, short, and fluffy, like a plush toy.

Cavoodles often have soft facial features that perfectly match gentle dogs with sweet-natured attitudes. They have big rounded bright eyes, that are often alert and observant as a poodle’s. From their Cavalier King Charles spaniel parent, they inherited the small round face with a flat short muzzle. Their ears flow freely by the side of their face, like pigtails, as it flops over their ear canals, unlike hunting breeds whose ears stand up straight and spiky.

Cavoodles have a short, slender body that is covered with a soft, thick coat. They have an elongated neck that connects their small face to the rest of their short body.  Its slim tail is long and hangs well past its hocks.

When it comes to their coating, Cavoodles are born with earth-toned colors of light cream, golden caramel, chocolate brown and dark sable. Depending on its parents and the process of cross-breeding, they may also appear to have multicolored coats. Cavoodles are not prone to shedding, so you can count on those soft, thick and wavy coats to grow all year round. This makes them the perfect pet for those who are suffering from allergies as they don’t leave traces of their hair everywhere!

Cavoodles are considered low-maintenance dogs and don’t require too much fuss when it comes to grooming. Since they don’t shed much, they only need a trim once every few months to keep their lovely lush coats in top shape.

Temperament

As gentle dogs, Cavoodles are fairly easy to manage. Compared to hunting or working dogs, toy breeds often have a more friendly and agreeable disposition. With this, Cavoodles make for gentle pets that won’t shy away from interactions or resist any attempt at cuddles and tickles.

They are also one of those dogs whose bark is much worse than their bite. Being gentle dogs, they have low-levels of aggression and would very rarely get mad, bite, or attack anyone — even strangers or other pets! This trait makes them safe to be around small children, other household pets, and the occasional visitors, thereby solidifying their status as family-friendly pets.

However, because of their outgoing and sociable personalities, they may bark twice as much as any other dog to catch attention. Do take note that Cavoodles have loud, deep voices. What they lack in size, they make up for loudness.

Lastly, Cavoodles have tremendous energy-level, thanks to their small size. They can play around with children for hours or entertain guests with their lively presence throughout the day. With their long lifespans and outgoing personality, Cavoodles are healthy and happy dogs that are fun to be around.

What to expect

Cavoodles are often said to match the intelligence of their parent-breed, the poodle. They can be trained easily to adapt to certain living situations or perform tricks. Cavoodles are one of the most adaptable pets a family can have as they can cope with city-life behaving appropriately inside apartment buildings, or run wild and free in the great outdoors.

As intelligent pets, Cavoodles don’t require as much stimulation as other dogs as they can keep themselves preoccupied with their curiosity and ability to socialise. However, as social dogs, they still do require affection and attention from time to time. If left alone for long periods of time, Cavoodles may develop a set of behavioral problems and a hint of aggression. Thus, they are best suited in family-friendly environments where there are a lot of people or pets around to interact with.

Intelligent, gentle and sociable. These traits along with their cute size and adorable soft facial features make the Cavoodle a perfect companion or pet for the entire family.
