Despite their name, Japanese Spitz originated in Germany and were later imported to Japan around 1920 where they gained popularity for their adorable appearance and affectionate nature.

While their dense coat may indicate they like to spend time outdoors in cold climates, they much prefer to be in the warmth, making them great indoor dogs.

Unlike many other dog breeds, a Japanese Spitz is always white. This colour and their fluffy fur has resulted in the nickname “cloud dog”.

What do Japanese Spitz look like?

Japanese Spitz are a small to medium sized dog breed known for their fluffy white coat and fox-like appearance. They typically stand between 30cm to 38cm tall at the shoulder and weigh around 5kg to 9kg. The life expectancy of a Japanese Spitz is typically 12 to 14 years.

One of the most striking features of the Japanese Spitz is its dense, double-layered coat which consists of a soft undercoat and a longer, straight outer coat that stands out around their neck and their tail which curls over their back.

They have expressive dark, almond-shaped eyes, small erect ears and a pointed muzzle, and are said to resemble their distant relatives, the Artic fox. Overall, they have a well-balanced and proportionate body which gives an agile and graceful appearance.

Temperament

Japanese Spitz always seem to wear a smile and have the happy personality to match. They are loving attention seekers with a spirited personality. Japanese Spitz are very intelligent and therefore, are highly trainable. However, the same smarts can result in mischief if left unstimulated and to their own devices.

Japanese Spitz are known for their loyal nature, alertness and bold bark which is surprising given their small size. Their bark is however more of a protective instinct rather than aggressive behaviour and can be easily stopped with reassurance from their owners.

What to expect

When welcoming a Japanese Spitz into your home, expect to embrace the presence of an affectionate and lively companion. These dogs are known for their friendly and outgoing nature, making them a wonderful addition to families and individuals alike. They thrive on human interaction and enjoy being part of daily activities, whether it’s going for walks, playing in the yard or lounging at home with their owners.

Despite their snow-white fur, Japanese Spitz don’t get dirty very easily. This is because their fur has a texture sometimes compared to non-stick Teflon. Mud generally slides off or can be easily brushed out when dry. Regular brushing, especially of the undercoat, is encourages at least once weekly to prevent knots and matting. They shed their coat twice a year with little to no shedding in-between their major sheds.
